Apollonio Domenichini, The Master of the Langmatt Foundation
(Venice 1715–c. 1770)
The Grand Canal with the Church of San Simeone Piccolo, oil on canvas, 55 x 88 cm, framed
Provenance: ex Collection of Counts of Harrach, Vienna.
Certificate: Egidio Martini, Venice; Dario Succi, Gorizia. Comparative
Literature: D. Succi, in: Mythos Venedig – Venezianische Veduten des 18. Jahrhunderts, exh. cat., Baden 1994, pp. 38–51, and Da Canaletto a Zuccarelli, Il Paesaggio Veneto del Settecento, exh. cat., Villa Manin, Passariano 2003. Dario Succi, who in his certificate rates our painting as a principal work by this previously anonymous artist, succeeded in identifying the painter, who had previously been referred to as the Master of the Langmatt Foundation, as the well-known Venetian artist Apollonio Domenichini, a renowned vedutist during his lifetime and in close proximity to the great masters.
A second version of this composition, slightly differing in perspective, is in the Langmatt Foundation in Baden, Switzerland.
Provenance: ex Collection of Counts of Harrach, Vienna. Certificate: Egidio Martini, Venice; Dario Succi, Gorizia. Comparative Literature: D. Succi, in: Mythos Venedig – Venezianische Veduten des 18. Jahrhunderts, exh. cat., Baden 1994, pp. 38–51, and
